We've discussed some of the dangers with WiFi networks (Watch Out For Hotspots) and the WiFi security precautions you should take before using WiFi to connect with your mobile device (Secure Yourself Before Connect). As with most security dangers, the most exposed area is where people have taken the least WiFi security precautions. With WiFi, most often the dangers lie with your home WiFi router. Most people, 85% in fact, think it is the safest place to connect with wireless Internet. A recent study in the UK reveals that over half of home network routers are left to operate with default settings. This means that of the 40,000 WiFi networks that were studied, almost half of them could be broken into in less than five minutes. And the ones without a password ---in merely seconds.
